Personal Learning Experiences: Woodwork, Russian Language and Digital or e-Marketing

Question 1: Describe in 4-5 sentences a memory you recall from when you were learning something in elementary or middle school.

What was the topic you were learning in elementary or middle school?

Woodwork at local small primary school in countryside or farming district.

Who was teaching you this topic in elementary or middle school?

The senior teacher taught woodwork.

How did you learn the information?

By demonstration, the practice to produce a ‘wooden’ outcome; with extra guidance from carpenter working on new classroom (who watched us).

What type of information/skill were you learning? For example, was it information/content, such as history, or company policies, or was it a skill, such as using Microsoft Word?

Very much a skill, following Kolb’s experiential learning theory and/or constructivist.

Why were you learning the information or skill?

Part of the state curriculum, useful skill for farm children (boys) and practical eye to hand coordination.

Question 2: Describe in 4-5 sentences a memory you recall from when you were learning something in high school or college.

What was the topic you were learning in high school or college?

Russian language.

Who was teaching you this topic in high school or college?

Russian and French speaking qualified teacher.

How did you learn the information?

What type of information/skill were you learning? For example, was it information/content, such as history, or company policies, or was it a skill, such as using Microsoft Word?

Mixture of information and skill, following the Nuffield course included content and ID for grammar and functions with learning resources for ‘production’ of skills such as listening/speaking via language laboratory, with a visiting native speaker and in class music with drama or role play, and excursions.

Why were you learning the information or skill?

Had to learn at least one language, cousin had already got me interested and a general interest in Russia.

Question 3: Describe in 4-5 sentences a memory you recall from when you were learning in a professional for formal (non-school) setting (first job, current career, etc.).

What was the topic you were learning in a professional setting?

Digital or e-marketing in international education.

Who was teaching you this topic in a professional setting?

Self-taught through a digital marketing eKit developed by an Australian Tourism organisation to allow travel agents to acquire skills in their own time.

How did you learn the information?

Following a series of short tutorials downloadable, on .pdf, with some YouTube, and then applying to own small business creating digital marketing strategy.

What type of information/skill were you learning? For example, was it information/content, such as history, or company policies, or was it a skill, such as using Microsoft Word?

Digital marketing cuts across information, content and skill; information on what and how to apply different digital resources, content is related due to digital marketing being based upon marketing content (used as examples in course) and skills of analysis, application and evaluation.

Why were you learning the information or skill?

Observing high cost, low efficiency and effectiveness of university managers travelling to international student recruitment events which were not analysed (targets outsourced to agents), yet all students were and are online with word of mouth driving marketing, that can be supported by digital.
